1980's - Present
In regards to the 1980's onwards to present, there were not much of a difference as cameras had got alot better. The main difference between the 80's and now is that there was more grain, the quality was not as good and the contrast seemed to be higher. Below is a video of the ten best teen movies of the 80's just to get the feel of how film was undertaken.

Possible Video Idea??

Recently a music video came out of one of my favourite bands. The band is called 'Young Guns' and the whole video plays in reverse with different timings throughout playback. I think this video works very well and could possibly work for my short film giving a different feel to the whole piece. This is something i will look into and try out with test shots in the weeks to come. The music video can be seen below.

Instrumentation, Sound and Effects

To capture the sound of each different era I will need many different instrument sounds and types. Below is a list of instruments, sounds and effects I will need to create the piece.

Instrumentation and Sounds

Guitar
Bass
Drums
Cymbals
Cowbell
Tamborine
Violin
Organ
Piano
Synths
Hand Claps
Cello
Double Bass
Shaker

Effects

Reverb
Delay
Tape Echo
Distortion
Clean
Crunch
Wah Wah
Compression
Chorus
Flanger

The music will be created using Cubase 5/6 and the POD UX8 audio interface. Using these tools gives me a variety of different sounds and effects allowing me to create a piece of music that captures all the different era's I want to cover.

Music Style

As I am going to be making the music/soundtrack to the short film myself I must gain an insight into what different instrumentation was used and also make sure that the genres that I write in, fit in with the era that the music will be played with.
The best way for me to do this was to listen to old vinyl that I had in the house aswell as those borrowed from friends and relatives to gain an understanding into what the 'hip' music was for that decade. As vinyl cannot be displayed on the internet youtube can provide me with links to the type of music researched throughout this process. The links can be found below under each different era.
As my short film is going to be 1-2 minutes in length the music will start off in the early era and as the film goes on it will pass through untill it reaches the present.

Counterculture of the 1960's

The counterculture of the 1960s was a cultural phenomenon that developed first in the United States and United Kingdom and spread throughout much of the Western world between 1960 and 1973. The movement gained momentum during the U.S. government's extensive military intervention in Vietnam. As the 1960s progressed, widespread tensions developed in American society that tended to flow along generational lines regarding the war in Vietnam, race relations, sexual mores, women's rights, traditional modes of authority, experimentation with psychoactive drugs, and differing interpretations of the American Dream. New cultural forms emerged, including the pop music of the British band The Beatles and the concurrent rise of hippie culture, which led to the rapid evolution of a youth subculture that emphasized change and experimentation. In addition to the Beatles, many songwriters, singers and musical groups from the United Kingdom and America came to impact the counterculture movement.

Culture and History

Volkswagen Heritage

1947 - The Dutch importer Ben Pon Sketches “the box on wheels” set to become the Transporter.

1949 - The general director of the Volkswagen factory, Heinrich Nordoff supports the production of the “sketch” and begins tests. The sketch was taken quite literally and the box on wheels undertook some refinements. The rounded front sections, which were then added to the square edged box created the friendly face of the Bulli, which went on, to become a familiar smile the world over.

1949 - The Prototype of the Transporter was unveiled in Wolfsburg. It was immediately christened the “Bulli”. On 12 November the VW Bulli was officially launched to a waiting automobile world.

1950 - Full production of the Transporter began (trademark law forbid the use of the name Bulli).

1954 - Bulli in all its various versions had secured its status as an essential feature of the road. The 100,000th Transporter was now cause for a celebration.

1956 - First Transporters roll off of the production line in the newly built factory in Hanover.

1962 - 1,000,000th Transporter left the production line in Hanover.

1967 - Transporter model is redesigned. It loses its smiling face and becomes the wide screen view T2 with a panorama windscreen.

1968 - 2,000,000th Transporter is built.

1975 - The first LT utility vehicle, a modern large Transporter is built at the factory. It opens a new chapter in the history of the company; it enables Volkswagen to make the courageous move into the light truck sector.

1979 - The T3 arrived and gave way to many technological advances such as diesel (1980) water-cooled engines (1982) and “syncro” four wheel drive (1985). Volkswagen (GB) Ltd takes over importership of MAN commercial vehicles.

1981 - Hanover Factory celebrates its 25th anniversary. Since its opening more then 5 million commercial vehicles had been produced there.

1983 - T3 water cooled.

1983 - The launch of the “Caravelle” now added a people carrier, offering all the comfort of a luxury car.

1985 - It is decided that the Volkswagen group will now be named Volkswagen AG.

2000 - The millennium saw the 50th anniversary of the legendary Volkswagen Transporter which has continuously demonstrated the Volkswagen qualities of reliability, economy and efficiency.

The Idea

The project will be made of up of three seperate elements creating one final piece of work.
  • Short Film - A story through the life/advert of a man and his VW Transporter van. The film will start off with the main character being young with the first model of the van(1960's), it will then progress through to the next model of the van where the man will be slightly older. This will go on until it reaches the present(2012) where the man will be old and his kids will be the age he was at the start. So in effect its a full cycle that leads the viewer to believe the process will start again.
  • Music - The music throughout the film will be composed by myself and will be linked with the time era of that section of the film.
  • Website - The website will encorporate the short film making it the central piece of the site. There will be four main sections to the website linking with each era from the film. When clicked on, the whole website styling will change to suit what the user has clicked on. It will also take the user back to that section of the film aswell.
Putting all three of these elements together will create a final piece that will emerse the user and let them see what the time period was like aswell as provide them with a story/advert of this man's life story with his van. From a target audience point of view this experience will appeal to a mass demographic ranging from the general public to enthuasiasts and even companies(Advertising).
